Making It Fun
I am always searching for new ways to have the greatest amount of fun with music making…
With that said, nearly thirty years of teaching, performing and exploring have finally led me to discover the joy of playing very simple song arrangements that can be performed by ‘just one person’ as well as with one or more friends.
The Musician’s Conundrum
Musicians often learn one or more parts of a song that then require additional band members, or a canned backing track, in order for the arrangement to sound and feel complete. And, on the flip side, full-sounding song arrangements that a musician can play all on their own are often quite complicated and quite challenging to play.
So, what I done here? I have created a bunch of very simple song arrangements that are a ton of fun to learn-and-play and that also come with a huge bonus / extra benefit!
Huge Bonus / Extra Benefit
The parts that make up each song arrangement are quite simple - and, this means that each arrangement provides an amazing opportunity for us to grow just as musical as possible throughout the entire process of learning and performing. And, just in case it needs to be said: growing just as musical as possible simply equals greater and greater feelings of musical accomplishment, enjoyment and fulfillment!
What To Do
If you are reading this and are having an epiphany one option, if you are already capable, is to just go for it: create your own super-simple, stand-alone arrangements and have a blast.
Another option, if you are going to benefit the most from having guidance, is for you and I to work together, over a few lessons, in order to learn one or more of the arrangements that I have already created. In this way, we can make sure that you are going to get the most from the experience of each song that you are adding to your setlist.
The Fun Starts Right Away - It Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect
In the following recordings you are going to hear ‘works in progress’. The more I practice, and the more I add more-and-more arrangements, the more I grow.
The fun starts right away. In other words, our ability to perform the songs does not have to be even-close-to perfect before we begin to get a very good taste of the kind of musical accomplishment, enjoyment and fulfillment that we all want. All we have to do is get started!
My Particular Choice Of Music
To make a long story much shorter, I used to play mostly blues. But, I had also grown up being influenced by my grandparent’s love for country music. My sister and I would stay at their house on a regular basis watching The Grand Ole Opry and Hee Haw on television while also listening to a lot of George Jones, Conway Twitty and more on the 8-Track player.
This means that we were hearing Buck Owens, Roy Clark, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Vince Gill, and many other country stars, too many to mention. Our grandparents were also Elvis Presley fans which opened up another set of doors as well. Plus, we were hearing Kenny Rogers and other more ‘contemporary for the time’ country stars on the radio - and, for local talent, we were hearing bands at various firehouse carnivals that would always feature bingo and live country music.
Anyway, everything that I had heard as kid, thanks to my grandparents, from bluegrass to country-and-western music has stayed with me. There are a lot of blues and even jazz elements to be found in this spread of Kentucky Bluegrass, Bakersfield Country, Nashville Country, Memphis [Sun Records, Carl Perkins & Elvis Presley] Rockabilly, Texas Swing, and more… So, with this music it just feels like I am coming home.
Flexible Application - Have Fun Playing Just About Anywhere
The way I am arranging and playing nowadays is right at home on the front or back porch just as it can be at home on stage with one or more additional musicians.
