Kids who fell in love with BMX riding in the 1970s and 1980s now find themselves at a unique crossroads. Many are now looking back and seeing that something truly magical had taken place for those who grew up in this era. It was an exciting time when kids were allowed to roam free, be adventurous, and have fun being out all day long! And, just about every kid, during this time, had a bike that could deliver them to the greatest amount of 'fun and freedom' that each day had to offer!
So, why are many who grew up in the 70s and 80s now at a crossroads? Well, to put it simply, age and culture are two powerful forces that have driven this generation directly to a crossroads. In general, kids eventually grow up and usually end up doing those things that culture says that adults ought to be doing. There is no problem with that. For some, this meant going to college, starting a career, having kids, and then eventually sending those kids off to college, to their first real jobs, and so on. So, now what are the kids from the 70s and 80s who are older adults and who are now [or are soon to be] empty nesters supposed to do?
Well, I say go back to being a kid again! Yes, there might be some background tasks to keep up with such as earning income and putting final touches on retirement accounts, investments, etc… Blah, blah, blah. :) But, think about it. What in your adult life turned out to be just as much fun as ‘simply being free’ and ‘simply being adventurous’ the way we were as kids? Perhaps many will respond in the positive by saying that ‘having kids of their own’ was the best part of being an adult. This is a beautiful answer, and I bet that most parents who grew up in the 70s and 80s tried everything possible to help their own kids discover and experience the same ‘magic of growing up’ that they themselves once knew! This means that the youthful combination of ‘simply being free’ and ‘simply being adventurous’ really is one of the absolute greatest goals for us to achieve and to experience in life! This is what I meant at the top of this paragraph by the phrase,..."I say go back to being a kid again!"
In other words, many now find themselves at crossroads where becoming ‘more-and-more like an older-and-older adult’ goes into one direction and instead: deciding to ‘remain just as youthful, free and adventurous as possible’ goes into yet another direction.
Becoming more-and-more like an older-and-older adult is the easy path. In this case, general culture simply points the way. However, for those who know the value of being and becoming 'more-and-more free and more-and-more adventurous', another path awaits! On this freer and more adventurous path it’s likely that there will be trade-offs. As we age, we need to pay closer attention to general fitness [food, sleep, exercise, and positive mindset, etc] so that we can remain fit enough to have fun being just as youthful, free and adventurous as possible [and, for as long as possible]! Check out my free Weight Loss Solution / Challenge if you are looking for 'a new lease on life' when it comes to fitness!
So, with all that said - and, as someone who looks back and truly celebrates growing up with BMX in the 70s and 80s - I get a truly great feeling every time I jump onto my DJ-BMX bike and begin to ride [which is on most days]! Owning and riding a bike provides a 'pretty darn cheap' pathway right back to all the ‘joy of feeling free' and 'joy of feeling adventurous’ again and again!
What activities are you going to be doing on your path to remaining just as youthful, free and adventurous as possible? Let me know in the comments!
In the video above, you’ll see that I am not doing anything crazy compared to the best riders out there, but it feels just as amazing as it always did when I was a kid – and, you just can’t put a price tag on that!
Thanks for reading - and, thank you for staying youthful, adventurous and full of love-for-life!
